Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2007: Real-Time Backups without Disrupting Work

If your network crashed right now, would your backup system have this morning’s files?

We trust backups to preserve our data in case of emergency. But there are two kinds of backup—full and incremental. And if both aren’t present, you stand to lose your most recent work.

Full backups occur when all files selected for backup are copied to the backup media. Simple, straightforward. However, incremental backups only copy files that have changed since the last incremental backup ran.

Normally, full backups run once a night. Incremental backups should run several times a day. But a backup routine is disruptive, isn’t it? People can’t work while their files are getting backed up.

Yes they can. If you’re running Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2007.

Part of System Center, Data Protection Manager 2007 (DPM) provides one of the most valuable services any network can get: dual real-time backups, incremental and full, without disrupting anyone’s work.

How? DPM 2007 runs small “agent” applications on client PCs to do its backups. These agents plug into Volume Shadow Service (VSS), a Microsoft service installed on all recent Microsoft products.

Like Exchange Server 2007. MOSS 2007. Windows Server 2003/2008. SQL Server 2005/2008. And XP/Vista client systems.

So half the functionality is already built into your systems. DPM just completes the chain, and lets you run incremental backups anytime. Users won’t even know it’s happening.

DPM is an easy choice if you want working copies of application data. Up-to-the-hour recovery. Or just an easier way to manage backups.

Call PlanetMagpie at 408-341-8770 and ask us for a backup consultation. We’ll determine if and how Data Protection Manager 2007 will benefit you. And your backups.
